Krupp Brothers The Doctor 2013

With its dark garnet hue, this extraordinary blend opens with aromas of raspberry and black cherry interlaced with white pepper and clove. The lush palate is dominated by flavors of cassis, blackberry, toffee, smoked duck and oak, which carry through to a lengthy finish. Pair with venison in huckleberry sauce and pork belly with cherry chutney.

Crosby Roamann Cupiens Videre Lucem Red Blend 2010

This tiny production blend surely is made in the modern cult style. Its tannins are soft and sexy, its flavors deep and delicious with milk chocolate, blackberry jam, cassis liqueur and buttery toast. The only thing it lacks is subtlety, but it does deserve its score for sheer Napa power.

Heitz Cabernet Martha's Vineyard 1967

With its unique mint, chocolate and rich, cedary currant flavors, Martha's Vineyard Cabernet has a signature flavor profile. It is also distinctive for its exquisite balance and ability to age. Although the wine's flavors are largely a function of the grape and vineyard, Joe Heitz's hand could be found in the winemaking style. He made sure the wine was rich, concentrated and balanced, which ensured that it would age well.

Leonetti Cabernet 2002

The astonishing, classic Leonetti aromas of penetrating, ripe black fruits, cedar, coffee and chocolate are there in spades, but the overall impression is that the oak has been pulled back just a bit, or perhaps the fruit is just that much riper. Violets and lead pencil continue the stream of sensuous highlights, as the wine winds into its pungent, densely saturated finish.

Caymus Vineyards Special Select 1991

Opaque, with deep ruby-red edges, even the sight of this wine is enticing. Very deep, rich cassis fruit, enmeshed in a smoky, mineral background, dominates the nose. Pure cassis extract is also present on the palate; a sweet entry yields to a firmly tannic, yet generous and amazingly long finish. Fine grained tannins give a serious texture to the wine. A rich, smoky spice character emerges in the aftertaste. A very complete, unctuous wine. Muscular and intensely concentrated, it nevertheless manages to display perfect balance.

Paradigm Estate Cabernet 1998

The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon turned out to be a lovely wine. The color is deep ruby-garnet and in the nose I get a lot of black cherry, cassis, spice, cedar, and hints of sweet toasty French oak. In the mouth the wine is very open and lush, well structured with the elegance and balance we have come to expect from this vineyard. The tannins are quite light and dusty. The finish is long with the ripe fruit flavors lasting several minutes. I particularly like the roundness in the mid-palate. It invites you to take another sip."

Dominus Napanook Vineyard 1994

The 1994 is a strikingly thick, compellingly rich wine with the texture of a great Pomerol, despite being made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine exhibits a dense purple color, and an incredibly fragrant nose of jammy black fruits, spice, smoke, and loamy, truffle-like scents. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, with thrilling levels of extract and richness, but no sense of heaviness or harshness. This seamless Dominus possesses no hard edges, as its acidity, tannin, and alcohol are beautifully meshed with copious quantities of ripe fruit. This wine offers early drinking, yet has the potential to last for 30+ years.

Beaulieu Vineyard Estate 1970

The 1970 has always been considered one of the great B.V. Private Reserves. Well-stored bottles continue to taste brilliantly. This wine performed spectacularly in this recent blind tasting (February, 1995), revealing a huge, complex bouquet of overripe, sweet, jammy, pruny fruit, cedar, herbs, spices, and fruitcake. Fat and rich, with unctuously-textured, chewy, expansive flavors, and a full-bodied finish, it was all this great wine can be.

Deep ruby-red. Explosive, somewhat feral, highly aromatic nose of cassis, roast coffee, game, smoky oak and chocolate; shows a very strong torrefaction aspect. Robert Mondavi Cabernet 1970

From a great looking bottle with a VHS fill, this wine had a deep red center and light red rims. The medium+ intensity nose had a fair amount over Provencal herb in the beginning. After a couple of hours of air, the herbs receded and the result was: black cherries, blackberries, red soil, Provencal herbs, and a hint of cedar.

In the mouth, this wine was ripe and round and yet it felt streamlined and precise due to its light body and crisp acidity. The tannins were light and round and yet clearly present. The overall balance was very impressive. A refined wine with great complexity and mouthfeel.

La Jota Howell Mt Cabernet 2002

The graciousness of the fruit defies the tannic weight of this wine, leaving a velvet impression, remarkably approachable for a young Howell Mountain cabernet, and extremely delicious. It's from vines the Smith family, the founders of La Jota, originally planted in the late '70s. The structure is there, underpinning the fresh black fruit, the acidity edging it with eucalyptus. Plump and satin-textured on release, this should age into a beauty.

La Jota Cabernet Howell Mt 20th Anniversary 2001

La Jota set out to make a great wine for their 20th, and lucky for them they ran into such a vintage. If it's less dense than the finest 2001s, it's still a great one. As flavorful as sweet Napa black currants get, and those Howell tannins are the structure that will let this wine develop.

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou St Julien, 1986

The 1986 Ducru Beaucaillou was served by Bruno Borie both decanted and directly from bottle, poured blind. From the bottle, it has an attractive bouquet with plush blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, indeed, showing more fruité than I was expecting. There is a roundness to these aromatics, perhaps a little more like 1985 in some ways. The palate is medium-bodied and here the seriousness and structure of the 1986 vintages shows through. There is impressive body and though it felt firm and masculine on the finish, there is clearly sufficient fruit that counterbalances the backbone. The decanted version showed a little more volatility on the nose, but here I discerned more complexity on the palate. The 1986 Ducru poured directly from bottle felt a little more savory and strangely, more cohesive, with more of the terroir coming through on the slightly loamy, brown sugar-tinged finish. Tasted July 2016.

Chateau Haut Brion, Pessac Leognan 1953

From a bottle with the original cork still intact, the wine was splash decanted and served. From the moment the wine hit the glass, we all knew we were in for a mind blowing treat. On the nose, the smoke, tar, tobacco, cigar box, cherry and earthy perfume was off the hook. But the pure silk textures of all that sweet, ripe, smoky fruit was breathtaking. The wine was exactly what old, fully mature Bordeaux is all about. If you are like me and cannot these wines today, try and find a rich friend with bottles in their cellar as this is the type of wine that dreams are made of. Apologies to Humphrey Bogart. (2016)

Chateau Haut Brion, Pessac Leognan 1966

This was paired up with the ’66 La Mission Haut Brion, and it was the slightly less impressive bottle of the two for the first hours it was in the glass. However, it continued to grow and gain depth as the evening wore on, and it was clearly the superior of the two wines by the time it had fully unfolded. The nose is classic HB, offering up notes of roasted cassis, plums, cigar ash, black truffles, Graves earth, and a vague topnote redolent of violets. On the palate the wine is ultimately medium-full (having put on weight as it opened up), with excellent focus and balance, and fine length and grip on the polished and complex finish. I used to think that the ’66 was a bit more of the red fruity and brick dust-like side of Haut Brion, but the last several bottles that I have tasted have moved decisively over to the black fruity side of the ledger. (Drink between 2003-2020) Review from 2007.

Chateau Haut Brion, Pessac Leognan 1961

One of the clear highlights of the night, the 1961 Haut-Brion races across the palate with remarkable opulence and power for a wine of its age. Layers of fruit build to a crescendo of pure pleasure, with hints of licorice, menthol, lavender, sage, cedar and leather that linger on the finish. In virtually any tasting the 1961 would steal the show, but here, in the presence of many of the estate’s legendary vintages, it is quite clear the 1961 doesn’t quite reach the heights of the 1959 of 1989. That in no way detracts from our immense pleasure, though. (2014)

Chateau Cheval Blanc, St Emilion 1959

The intense, generous nose displays hints of truffle and black pepper. This mythical Cheval Blanc is rich and full-bodied on the palate. It is also well-structured, with coffee, leather, and blackcurrant flavours - altogether unbelievably delicious, succulent, and long. Huge and incomparably rich, 1959 Cheval Blanc is complex, well-focused, and concentrated. A benchmark for the estate!  Incidentally, Gaston Vaissiere, the old maitre de chai, always recommended tasting the 1959 immediately after opening, with no decanting, as he did not think that contact with the air was beneficial for this vintage. In 2011 at the Chateau, such incredible dimension and layers on the nose. Moroccan mint. Just absolutely fascinating - intellectual and challenging from a vocabulary point of view. Such AMAZING blackberry tastes. So mouth-enveloping and totally mouth-coating. Fabulous harmony of texture, fruit and ripe tannins. Finishes two hours later on a note of prune liqueur. This is one of the best wines Bordeaux has ever produced.

Chateau Cheval Blanc St Emilion, 1998

A potentially immortal example that has gained significant weight since it has been bottled, this blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot has a saturated purple color and a glorious nose of menthol, plums, mulberries, new saddle leather, cocoa, and vanilla. Remarkably fuller-bodied than I ever remembered it young, with an amazingly seamless texture and tremendous concentration and extract, this full-bodied yet gorgeously pure and elegant wine is impeccably balanced and certainly one of the all-time great Cheval Blancs. If it continues to improve as much as it has over the last three years since bottling, this wine will certainly rival the 2000, 1990, and 1982. -Robert Parker

Chateau Cheval Blanc St Emilion, 1999

The complex, explosively fragrant 1999 Cheval Blanc is a blend of 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Franc. It is already showing well, which is a good sign for a wine that traditionally is reserved early in life, but puts on weight and richness in the bottle. Stylistically, this wine is probably cut from the same mold as vintages such as 1985, 1966, and 1962. The color is a dense ruby with purple nuances. Once past the blockbuster bouquet of menthol, leather, black fruits, licorice, and mocha, the wine reveals medium body, extraordinary elegance, purity, and sweet, harmonious flavors with no hard edges. This is a seamless beauty of finesse, charm, and concentration. The 1999 is an exciting Cheval Blanc to drink relatively young. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2022.
